Codepraxis is a learning platform developed by the PMP to provide a secure, completely offline coding environment for tablets widely available in U.S. prisons.
Computer science classes in prison typically only offer temporary access to coding hardware. After finishing a course, most incarcerated students lack the opportunity to practice, causing their technical skills to deteriorate. To address this problem, a team of PMP volunteers built a scalable solution that leverages a point of access already available to incarcerated individuals: personal tablets.
Since 2020, most facilities in the United States have made tablets available for entertainment and communication. Using this resource for education will expand access to opportunity and transform the path to rehabilitation. Formerly incarcerated individuals face an unemployment rate of up to 27% and a much lower earning potential than the general population. Most often, they are relegated to low-wage and temporary work. This lack of equitable opportunities and pathways to meaningful, rewarding employment is a significant barrier to reducing recidivism.
Codepraxis is available for implementation at juvenile and adult correctional facilities worldwide.
